Exploring Battleground Lake State Park: Your Ultimate Pacific Northwest Adventure

Nestled just 7 minutes from Battleground, Washington, and a quick 30-minute drive from Portland International Airport (PDX), Battleground Lake State Park is a 280-acre gem in the heart of the Cascade Mountains. Surrounded by towering evergreens and centered around a stunning volcanic lake, this park is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. Whether you're into camping, fishing, boating, hiking, or horseback riding, this park has it all. Hi, I’m Jared Ritz, your Southwest Washington real estate and lifestyle expert, and I’m excited to take you on a virtual tour of this Pacific Northwest paradise!

Why Visit Battleground Lake State Park?

This state park offers a little something for everyone, making it an ideal spot for families, friends, or solo adventurers. Here’s what you can expect:

  • Campsites and RV Sites: Pitch a tent or park your RV (up to 35 feet) at one of the well-maintained sites, complete with water, power, and fire pit areas. The sites are nestled among 200-year-old Douglas firs, offering shade and privacy.

  • Improved Cabins: Four year-round cabins with water, power, electric heat, and spacious front decks provide a cozy retreat. Built with poured concrete foundations and standing seam roofs, these cabins are both durable and charming.

  • Equestrian Facilities: Horse lovers will find four two-stall corrals, hitching posts, and a large parking area for trailers. The park’s five miles of well-maintained equestrian trails are perfect for exploring.

  • Boating and Swimming: The volcanic lake, with its aqua-green glacial water, is a non-motorized haven (small battery-powered motors are allowed). A boat ramp, fishing dock, and designated swimming areas make water activities accessible and fun.

  • Trails: Choose between the lower trail for a waterside stroll or the upper trail for scenic views. Both are shaded by old-growth trees, perfect for walking your dog (leashed, though locals sometimes bend the rules in the off-season).

  • Group Campsite: Ideal for large gatherings (25–65 people), the group site features lean-tos with bunk beds, a horseshoe pit, grills, and a private entrance.

  • Kayak and Paddleboard Rentals: No gear? No problem! The park’s store offers single and double kayaks, paddleboards, and kids’ kayaks for rent. Just visit the camp store to sign a waiver and get your equipment.

The Discover Pass: Your Key to Adventure

To access Battleground Lake State Park (and all Washington State Parks), you’ll need a Discover Pass. It’s a steal at $30 for a yearly pass or $10 for a daily pass, and it covers two vehicles, making it perfect for families or groups. Trust me, $30 for a year of unlimited access to this much natural beauty is a no-brainer. Grab one at the start of the season to save big!

Highlights of the Park

The Volcanic Lake

Battleground Lake’s vibrant aqua-green water, rumored to be a lava tube from Mount St. Helens (about an hour and 20 minutes away), is a sight to behold. While locals jokingly say the lake has “no bottom,” rest assured it does—just don’t expect to touch it while swimming! The lake is perfect for kayaking, paddleboarding, or a refreshing dip on a hot summer day (think 82°F in Clark County).

The Fishing Dock

The fishing dock is a family favorite, offering easy access for anglers of all ages. I’ve brought my daughter here, and the results are impressive! Whether you’re casting a line or watching kids do backflips off the dock, it’s a lively spot filled with the sounds of splashing water and summer fun.

Picnic Spots and Trails

Scattered throughout the park are picnic areas with stunning lake views, shaded by towering evergreens and big leaf maples. The trail system is equally impressive, with well-maintained lower and upper trails offering both waterside access and elevated vistas. My wife and I used to walk these trails with our dog, Douggee, before we had kids, and it’s still one of the best spots for a peaceful hike.

The Camp Store

Need snacks, coffee, or a quick burger? The camp store has you covered with provisions, hot food, and even kayak rentals. It’s a convenient hub for all your needs, complete with dining tables under giant cedar trees.

Equestrian Paradise

For horse enthusiasts, the park is a dream. The equestrian campsite is secluded, with four corrals, fire pits, and easy trail access. The large parking area makes it easy to maneuver horse trailers, and the surrounding horse community keeps the trails in top shape. You don’t need to trek to Gifford Pinchot National Forest—this is horse camping at its most convenient, just 7 minutes from Battleground.

RV and Cabin Camping

The RV sites and cabins are thoughtfully designed for accessibility and comfort. The RV sites are spacious, with some allowing two RVs side by side for group trips. The cabins, surrounded by ancient trees, are perfect for a cozy getaway, whether it’s a weekend escape or a week-long retreat.

Group Camping

The group campsite is a standout for family reunions, church outings, or friend gatherings. With lean-tos, bunk beds, a horseshoe pit, and plenty of space for games, it’s a private paradise. Reserve it by calling 1-888-CAMPOUT.

Why Locals Love It (and Why You Should Too)

Despite its proximity to Battleground and Vancouver, many locals have yet to discover this hidden gem. Whether you’re a Clark County resident or visiting from out of state, Battleground Lake State Park offers unparalleled accessibility and natural beauty. It’s the kind of place where you can spend a day swimming, fishing, or hiking, or a week camping under the stars—all just a short drive from urban centers like Portland or Camas.

Plan Your Visit

Ready to explore? Here’s how to make the most of your trip:

  • Bring a Discover Pass: Save money with the annual pass.

  • Check the Camp Store: Stock up on snacks or rent kayaks for the day.

  • Explore the Trails: Walk or ride the five miles of trails for breathtaking views.

  • Reserve in Advance: Book campsites, cabins, or the group site at 1-888-CAMPOUT.

  • Look for the Gate: If you’re hauling a horse trailer, watch for the metal gate at 167th and 244th Street for easy equestrian parking access.
